Malaysia has one of the most sophisticated economies, advanced infrastructure networks and stable political environments in South East Asia.

South Australia is well positioned to participate in Malaysia’s development through business and institutional involvement. Direct flights between Adelaide and Kuala Lumpur provide a conduit for greater business, people-to-people connections and commerce.

The bilateral trade relationship between Australia and Malaysia reached a significant milestone with the signing of the Malaysia-Australia Free Trade Agreement which provides gains for services and investment.

South Australia and Penang signed a communique to establish a Joint Working Group in March 2016 to develop key sectors of growth that will lead to further collaboration, partnership and opportunities for mutual growth.

Sector opportunities

Food, wine and agribusiness

South Australian companies can provide services and technologies to increase business productivity and competitiveness for the livestock, dairy, grains and horticulture sectors in Malaysia.

Education, research and development

Malaysia is opening its vocational education and training sector to foreign providers as it seeks to increase workforce productivity.

Smart Cities

South Australia and Malaysia share challenges and opportunities in planning and development. Together, we can support Malaysia’s urbanisation by supplying products, technology and services in construction and environmental areas.

Health and aged care

Malaysia is forecast to become an aged society in less than five years and, with rising health care costs, there is a need for advanced and cost-effective medical devices and equipment, along with health infrastructure.

Defence and advanced manufacturing

South Australia can leverage the relationship the Australian Defence Force has with its Malaysian counterpart through the Five Power Defence Arrangements and the Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program.
