One of the world’s largest retailers, Kaufland, has been granted development approval to build its first South Australian store in Prospect, creating hundreds of construction and retail jobs.
The multi-million development, on a 22,000sqm vacant site on the corner of Churchill and Regency roads, will feature a Kaufland supermarket, food hall, outside dining area and support tenancies.
Acting Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Tim Whetstone, welcomed the company’s significant investment as a further vote of confidence in South Australia’s burgeoning economy.
“To have a company of Kaufland’s international standing choose to establish itself in South Australia speaks volumes for their confidence in the state’s economy and will continue to build on the momentum we’ve seen in the past 12 months,’’ said Minister Whetstone.
“Not only will this project create an estimated 150 construction jobs and up to another 100 retail jobs upon completion, it will offer South Australian consumers more choice. We look forward to working with the company as they look to expand into other sites across the state.”
Kaufland Australia’s Managing Director Julia Kern said the company is committed to investing in South Australia for the long term, and this approval by the independent State Commission Assessment Panel marks a tremendous and exciting milestone.
“We hope our Prospect store will be the first in a series of further investments our company makes in South Australia,” Ms Kern said.
Formerly owned by Australian National Railways, the Churchill Road site has been vacant since 2001 and was extensively remediated in 2009.
Planning for Kaufland’s ANZAC Highway store, located on the former Le Cornu site at Ashford, is also well underway.
Construction of the Prospect development is due to begin later this year.
